Black and STEMbrurary, Days 1-2
Feb. 2nd, 2025 09:22 amIn June, I did a month of Pride books. How about a month of notable STEM figures for Black History Month?
I don't want to do FB or Insta, or rather, I don't want to be on FB or Insta and start doomscrolling, so you'll all be subjected to my ramblings.
1. Kia M. Washington, MD
Dr. Washington is the Director of Research at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She did her residency in plastic surgery with a fellowship in hand surgery, both at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. One of her main research interests is whole eye transplantation, which is something nobody's been able to do.
Dr Washington has come to our institution to speak at conferences a few times. I always miss her due to a conflict. Next time!
2. Paula T. Hammond, PhD
Dr. Hammond is the head of Chemical Engineering at MIT. She specializes in targeted controlled drug delivery. She has won a shit-ton of awards, she's founded a company, and she's on the board of several others. She has over 200 publications. When our lab was at MIT, I worked on the floor above hers.
(No, these will not all be people tangentially in my field. But I wanted to highlight some living, working scientists. We'll get into some bigger discoveries later in the month)
